NIfty Harps in July

The Nifty Harp Project C.I.C.

The Nifty Harp Project, launched at The Edinburgh International Harp Festival, aims to increase the number of new players of the Scottish small harp. Harpist Rachel Hair will be bringing a selection of Nifty harps along for you to try at the harp workshop on Saturday 13th July at McMillan Hall.

The Wee Nifty Harp is an inexpensive 27-string starter instrument, from acclaimed professional harp maker Mark Norris, that uses innovative design techniques to achieve affordability without compromising playability.

Professional harps are beautifully hand-made instruments constructed with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Their quality makes them expensive to buy and such an outlay can be daunting for new players as they just start to learn.  For the same reason hire harps are often in short supply and that too can be frustrating for students as they try to find a suitable, but affordable instrument.

By producing large enough numbers of highly competent and affordable instruments, The Nifty Harp Project will enable teachers to use groups of identical instruments when teaching their students or running their come and try sessions. Enthusiastic new players can then go to www.niftyharps.scot and easily hire or buy a Wee Nifty Harp.

Have you always wanted to have a go of the harp but never had the chance to? Well this is your chance at last!

You'll learn the basics and even a wee tune with one of Scotland's most respected harpists, composers and tutors Rachel Hair.  No experience necessary, all ages welcome and harps provided thanks to support from the The Nifty Harp Project C.I.C.

Workshop places are FREE for under 25's or £10.00 for everyone else and you can book online for Rachel's harp workshop at the McMillan Hall on Saturday 13th July 2019 from 3:00pm by clicking the button below.

Workshops at this year's festival

With so many outstanding musicians in Newton Stewart this weekend it would be foolish not to take full advantage, and we've done just that with a superb programme of traditional music workshops which are included as part of the Weekend Pass ticket, £10 per adult or £Free for under 25s.

Highland dancing competition unable to go ahead this year

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the postponement of this year's Highland dancing competition at Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival. Continued funding cuts have meant some very difficult decisions have had to be made, however we do hope to bring this back in 2025.
