Rose Byers

We are delighted to be welcoming local singer Rose Byers to the festival this year. Rose will be opening the Saturday night concert at the McMillan Hall, Newton Stewart, on 13th July 2019 which also features Duncan Chisholm and Rachel Hair & Ron Jappy.

A gifted young musician, Rose began performing traditional Scottish songs at the region’s Burns Schools Competition at the age of just eight. Since then she has won numerous awards, including the highest ranking at the Dumfries Music Festival, and the national finals of the Burns Schools Competition. An accomplished singer and charismatic performer, Rose, 13, is also a talented fiddle player and has added the piano and ukulele to her repertoire. She also regularly recites Burns' poems.

Her dream is to study traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, following her heroes Emily Smith, Robyn Stapleton and Claire Hastings.

The Lockerbie Academy pupil’s passion for trad has been recognised at Robert Burns’ former home Ellisland Farm, where she regularly performs and has been made its first Junior Ambassador.

In November, she was named Perfomer of the Year at the Dumfries & Galloway Life Awards and she has performed all over Scotland including at the Scottish Parliament.

Workshops at this year's festival

With so many outstanding musicians in Newton Stewart this weekend it would be foolish not to take full advantage, and we've done just that with a superb programme of traditional music workshops which are included as part of the Weekend Pass ticket, £10 per adult or £Free for under 25s.

Highland dancing competition unable to go ahead this year

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the postponement of this year's Highland dancing competition at Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival. Continued funding cuts have meant some very difficult decisions have had to be made, however we do hope to bring this back in 2025.
