Saltire Awards for Young Volunteers

Young volunteers with their Saltire Award certificates

Local young people recently received their Saltire Award certificates in recognition of the volunteering they did at Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival in 2019.

Saltire Awards are the Scottish Government’s way of celebrating, rewarding and recognising the commitment and contribution young people are making through volunteering in their communities.

Over the festival weekend, the four young people contributed nearly 100 hours of volunteering, which gained them their Saltire Approach certificates. The young people took on a range of volunteer roles, which included assisting with the PA set up, helping with site management, and helping with ticket sales and customer service at the evening concerts.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers for their support this year and we're delighted that they are also now involved in delivering TVYP (The Vault Youth Project) at the new arts centre in Newton Stewart.

If you'd like to find out more about volunteering at the festival, or about TVYP and how you can get involved, please contact Youth & Volunteer Development Officer Rhona Jones on 01671 404924 or by e-mail at rhona@tradmusic.com.

Serving local produce ensures that the project supports local businesses and the local community. A huge favourite are the beers from Five Kingdoms Brewery which are brewed in Isle of Whithorn. We are hugely grateful to Alastair and his team for their very generous support for this year's festival.

Workshops at this year's festival

With so many outstanding musicians in Newton Stewart this weekend it would be foolish not to take full advantage, and we've done just that with a superb programme of traditional music workshops which are included as part of the Weekend Pass ticket, £10 per adult or £Free for under 25s.

Highland dancing competition unable to go ahead this year

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the postponement of this year's Highland dancing competition at Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival. Continued funding cuts have meant some very difficult decisions have had to be made, however we do hope to bring this back in 2025.
